Revenge

As we sit wondering about the explosion in the nuclear reactor, I cannot help wondering if this isn't nature's way of getting back. There is a Tamil word that fits our attitude to nature appropriately - sorandarathu. Literally dig our nails into the last available resource and grab every iota of it in our greedy hands.

But having got used to our comforts, where is it that we can cut down? Will we stop killing trees, reclaiming land, mining, poaching, drilling, populating and therefore restarting the entire cycle? In retrospect, is industrialisation a boon or a bane?

It is just nature. There were tsunami's/ earthquakes happening much before we destroyed the forests, much before we created imbalance in the food chain.

  2. Absolutely...including the melting of ice...

But we didn't have to grapple with nuclear leaks back then. A catastrophe would damage one place. But today, we have made even that a global phenomenon...no?

  3. For those who may mistake my blog as saying nature is deliberately planning our downfall for our sins... My point is not that we sinned and so we are punished. My point is that we have destroyed nature so much that natural protections have come down, and risks increased multifold.

When the tsunami hit the Tamil Nadu coast in 2004 Dec, Pitchavaram was spared because of the mangroves there. On hearing this, I believe the govt. went on a mangroves planting spree. As a result, olive ridley turtles are unable to find enough beach to lay their eggs in...

I hope my meaning is clearer.

  4. Humans have lost their humanitarian consideration that the boon we have in abundance has transformed into bane. Otherwise we are enveloped by boons.

I believe nature has its own way of destruction and construction. We are so closely intertwined with nature that everything we do in this universe will have its own repercussions....

Hai Meera, I am from Kerala....
