Written in Stone

It was a piece of rock
Standing atop a hillock
Surveying the lands below
Silent, with a majestic brow

The earth shook violently
Did it dislodge the rock? Not a bit!
Heavens sent thunder and lightning
Opened up, rainwaters flooding

Still it remained, mute through it all
Unshaken, unafraid of any fall
Firm in its conviction
Rooted, not worried about eviction

Oh, how it inspired!
Making people aspire
To be remembered by posterity
Etching their names, for eternity

Did it laugh or ever mock?
It bore the engravings without shock.
Forgotten,  after all a mere stone
Keeping us immortal after we are gone.
