5 Reasons to Stop Thinking

Like the breath, thoughts flow constantly. Surrounding us completely, demanding our attention, the constant stream can be as joyous as swimming with the current, or as challenging as against it.

When joyous thoughts surround us, we rarely give it a thought - pardon the pun. But the trouble is, it is never only that.



1. It can make us lazy - procrastinate. Watch the debate in your mind: Thought 1 to thought 2, suddenly changing voices, swapping roles, but intent only on one thing... To make us procrastinate taking action. Telling us how we will become a star, but another day.

2. It can paralyse - the roadblocks and challenges it creates on our way are higher than Mount Everest, deeper than the sea... 'What if?' it asks every time. Better than the best lawyer, it can present hypothetical situations that, if they come to passe, can indeed make taking even one step impossible.

3. Draw us into its stories - Stoke passions, create doubts, fictionalise facts and convince us of their truth. Make us suspect, love, hate, or trust anyone without rhyme or reason...

4. Engross us - Just drifting on the thought wave can make us forget our present, our reality, the passage of time, the people around us. A mass entertainer, an active mind can make us oblivious to our reality.

5. Compare - and most of the times, find us wanting. In wealth, in health, in wisdom, in happiness... Envy, complex... Or, to feel good, delude us into believing we are better. Than what? Than who? It doesn't matter. Making us swing from high to low and back... That's how it teases us.

It is our greatest ally, but only in appearance. All our hesitations, self-doubts, emotional outbursts, perceived insults have their root in this mind, in these thought processes. Leave it aside, ignore it. Stop thinking so much...

How? Look at the other channel that is just as constant but totally neglected. Watch your breath. Experience the joy of inhaling. Feel your lungs, your abdomen fill up. Feel it flow through your body, with the blood flowing through the channels, oxygenating it and reaching the organs. Feel the impure air come out as you exhale... Watch how just this awareness hits your brain and spreads a sense of euphoria more potent than any drug of forgetfulness... And more effective.

You make this a practice, and you will find your 24 hours is more than enough to achieve all that you dream of. Once all futile thoughts are eliminated, every second is an opportunity...

Try it and live your life better. Leave the last moment behind. Leave the next moment to that moment... Right now, just enjoy being alive.
